Our approach

Joel Laing is an experienced physiotherapist, working in private practice for almost 20 years. He is highly trained in Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy (Diploma in MDT/McKenzie Method), and has a proven track record of finding solutions to even the most complex and persistent pain problems.

Joel’s approach is based on the latest evidence, and he prioritizes practical and efficient solutions that empower his patients with the tools and understanding they need to resolve their pain. He believes in educating his patients about the nature of their problem, so they can take an active role in their own recovery.

Joel is widely respected amongst his peers and is a trusted referral source for experienced Sports Physicians, Rheumatologists and other practitioners. He is also a lifelong learner, always seeking to expand his knowledge and skills to better serve his patients.

What sets Joel apart is his personal experience with persistent pain. He suffered from a lower back disc rupture, which caused him to experience years of pain. However, he was able to overcome it and now runs ultra-marathons, trains in the gym, and doesn’t think twice about his back. This personal experience gives him a unique perspective, and inspires him to help others find their own path to recovery and resilience.

Appointments with Joel.

Joel offers both in person and Tele-health options for those that can not physically get to the clinic. In your consultation, Joel will listen to your story to understand your problem and the effect it is having on you. He will explain the nature of your problem to you. And you will be given the tools you need to get out of pain and get back into doing the things you love to do, or need to do with your work, family and social life.

In-person and remote options

What is Mechanical Diagnosis (MDT or the McKenzie Method) ?

It is not a form of treatment or set of exercises. It is a type of assessment, where your symptoms are tested with movements, positions and other loads to see how they react. This can assist with classifying (diagnosing) your problem, and identify loading strategies you can perform yourself for relieving pain, restoring confidence and capacity.

What can I expect from my assessment and session with Joel?

Joel will let me tell my story so he understands my issue and how it is impacting my life. He will ask questions to gather more information, to better understand it and it’s effect on you. He will then put you through a thorough physical exam to further diagnose, test and understand your problem. He will then explain all this information to you, and give you both the understanding and tools to fix your issue. Treatment is rarely hands on, but usually includes education and movement to restore strength, improve function and relieve pain.

What are the consultation fees?

Do I need a referral to see Joel?

No. Whilst most patients Joel sees tend to be referred it is not essential to be referred. You can just create an appointment using the online booking tab.

I am not seeing any available appointments for a few weeks, is something wrong with the website booking system?

No. Joel is frequently booked for 2-3 weeks in advance given his limited consulting capacity of only Wed 5-8pm and Friday 3-6pm (as he also works full time for Fire Rescue Victoria). You can always book the soonest available appointment and email joel to be placed on a waiting list to potentially get in sooner if there are cancellations.

Do you see workcover and TAC referrals?

Joel has limited appointments and time given his commitments. He also has no reception assistance. As such he does not see Worksafe or TAC patients given the time taken for paperwork. These patients are welcome to pay and see him privately. On average Joel only see’s clients for 2-3 sessions.

Do you see EPC patients and do private health rebates?

EPC referrals are accepted. To see if you are eligible for this you would need to speak to your GP. We can do private health rebates on the spot as we have a HICAPS terminal. How much you get back will depend on your fund and level of cover.

Is there parking at the clinic, or public transport close by?

Yes there is parking available near the clinic, and a carpark behind it off Albion Rd. It is a 10-15 min walk from Glen Iris train station (800m away).

Do you have a fax number to receive EPC plans, imaging reports etc?

No. Please email these to joel at joellaing01@gmail.com with relevant subject heading.
